A confession, RE: my One a Week Art Challenge

For the past 40+ weeks, on my blog, when I have posted each piece of the week, I have shared a little bit about why I created it or the meaning behind the piece, or a poem related to the artwork, or my inspiration for that week's art. You might have noticed that this week, I did not have much to say about my artwork. There is a reason…a confession, really.

My confession is that for the past month or so, I have been really struggling. Struggling to find inspiration. Struggling to decide what to create. And, struggling to create anything. The enthusiasm and passion I had had in the first half (and more) of the year is MIA.

Now...before I go on telling my tale of woe, I need to pause and let you know that I realize the ridiculousness of what I am saying. I mean, "Woe is me, I am having art problems.” Seriously, if that is my biggest woe, then I have it good. There are real problems in life and this is soooo minuscule.

But I share this with you because, well, right now, it is my truth. And, because I have come to understand something important about this time of struggle.

I really wanted to blow through this One a Week Art Challenge and tell you about how easy-breezy it was. I wanted to share with you how I was inspired, each and every week, to create a masterpiece. I wanted to tell you that I loved all of the artwork that I have created and that there was no way I could choose my favorite. I wanted to grow as an artist and believe that my art was getting better and better with each piece.

And at some point and time throughout this year, each and every one of those statements, were true. But right now, I am not sure if any of them are. I am second-guessing myself and my abilities. I am in the muck - thick, sticky, heavy muck - of this weekly challenge, and I am barely plodding through it.

My motivation is missing, my inspiration is lacking, and my confidence feels hollow. At this point the only thing keeping me going is the commitment that I made.
So it goes like this…

I go to my art studio
Planning to create
I start
It feels wrong
I stop
I look for inspiration
Find none
I get discouraged
I take a break
Hoping that inspiration will hit
I get an idea
I go back to my art studio
Try again…

Hoping that the cycle doesn’t continue
Hoping that I create a piece I love
Determined to create one piece each week

Picture
It wasn’t like this before. The resistance wasn’t so strong. The inspiration came easier. My motivation was present. And, sometimes it even felt like the art created itself.

I don’t tell you this to gain your sympathies. Nor am I looking for praise.

I am sharing this with you because, I have discovered that this place of angst, frustration, and downtrodden-ness, is simply (but not simple) part of the process. And, as is true with anything important in life, the only way through is persistence.

So, onward (with my fingers crossed – hoping that this week will be easier).

9 weeks to go!

Week 42 - Berea, Ohio

In 1997, I moved from Menomonie, Wisconsin to Berea, Ohio and started my job at Baldwin-Wallace College. I was 27 years old and in the previous decade, I had lived in three different states and nine different apartments. So, if you would of asked me then, if I would be spending the next 20+ years in Berea, Ohio, I would have confidently told you "I, seriously, doubt it!"

But after meeting my husband (a Berea native) in 2001, getting married in 2003 and having our boys in 2004 and 2006, our family settled down and made Berea home. And, I have come to love my adopted hometown.

This week's piece celebrates Berea, Ohio.
Picture
For those of you who are not familiar with Berea let me share a little bit about my city.

The town was founded in 1836 and, as the story goes, the name Berea beat out the alternate name of Tabor through a flip of a coin. Berea is 24 miles southwest of Cleveland. Today, on first glance, Berea may seem like just one of many suburbs, but upon further observation, it becomes clear that the town's history makes Berea extra special.

Berea was known as the "Grindstone Capital of the World" due to the sandstone quarries that operated in the town from the 1830's into the 1930's. These former quarries are now a cherished part of the Cleveland Metroparks that run diagonally through Berea and Coe Lake Park. At these magnificent parks we get to enjoy biking and bridle trails, picnic areas, hiking paths, beautiful waterfalls, gazebos, outdoor concerts and so much more! The are a perfect neslted

The town square is iconic Americana, but Berea's downtown, is a Triangle. A downtown, filled with shops, restaurants and gathering places. In the past 20 years, I have seen the Triangle in various states of economic liveliness, but today, with the addition of building just north of the Triangle, I  see new life in the heart of our lovely city.

Baldwin Wallace University (BW) is also a wonderful part of Berea. The school was founded in 1845 as Baldwin Institute and eventually the school merged with nearby German Wallace College in 1914. Much of the BW campus is adorned with gorgeous sandstone buildings, built with stone from the local quarries. It truly is a beautiful campus.

The Cuyahoga County Fairground sits on the eastern edge of Berea. The fairgrounds were established in Berea in 1893. While, it is no longer in a agricultural area, I imagine in its heyday, it was quite and adventure for Clevelanders to travel to rural Berea to enjoy the annual fair.

Berea is also home to the Cleveland Browns. Every late July and early August, Bereans get to enjoy a sea of orange and brown fans heading down Beech St. to attend training camp. It is a pilgrimage for many dedicated fans, and my boys have reaped the benefits of the crowds by hosting a lemonade stand each year. It has been fun to watch these budding entrepreneurs learn valuable lessons.

There are many reasons why I love Berea but mostly, I appreciate that it has the charm of a small college town, with the conveniences of suburban living, yet close enough to enjoy outings in a large city.

Making a piece of artwork celebrating Berea, adds a little bit of happy into my world! I hope you like it too!

Thanks for takinf the time to read about my town.

Make it a HAPPY Day!

There's a reason we are called "Humankind".
Picture
HUMAN KIND
Be Human
Walk upright
Employ your brain
Use your words
Be a part of community
Make mistakes
Say "I'm sorry"
Feel emotions
See the possibilities
Strive for more
Be Kind
Respect others
Listen for understanding
Speak with civility
Help those in need
Lead with love
Say "please" and "thank you"
Give the benefit of the doubt
Look for the good
Give grace
Be Both
Make it a HAPPY day!
